15-inch LCD monitors group test

flat panel screens for the desktop

These screens are still expensive by comparison with a normal CRT monitor. However, competition is increasing and if you're looking for all the benefits that they undoubtedly posses, then some of these may fit your requirements.

By far the most common size of monitor is the fifteen-inch display (roughly equating to a 16- or 17-inch CRT screen because of the 'dead zone' around the older style of display) and these come in two varieties. The first is the straightforward swap out for an existing CRT monitor with basic connections, while the other has multimedia features suitable for video playback and games. Several include an USB hub; these are a welcome addition and make connecting external devices much easier.

The Hansol is good value for a direct swap out of an existing CRT and should be available at better prices than their recommended retail. Most of the others offer good performance, some more suited to wide screen viewing, but at a price. If you're looking for a wide viewing angle to use as an information screen then the ADI Microscan may be worthy of consideration. However, our favourite that combines reasonable value with a great specification, is the Bravura from Selwyn, which in our opinion offers the best balance of performance and price.
