Google has rolled out a movie rental service for its Android users in the UK with an initial catalogue of 1,000 titles, starting from £2.59.
The rental service will be available to users of Android-based smartphones as well as tablet devices. Users can rent a movie for as little as £2.59 for 30 days. According to the UK's Telegraph newspaper, once the user starts watching the movie, the movie will only be available for the next 48 hours.
Users would need to download an Android application to view the movies and the list of movies is available on market.android.com/movies. Old favourites such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Bend It Like Beckham are there, along with recently released movies like Green Lantern and Fast & Furious 5, reports Hexus.
The move by Google follows its recent rental service on YouTube that is being seen as providing direct competition to movie streaming and rental giants like Netflix and LoveFilm.
Google's latest offering is already available in the US, but prices tag is seen as being on the higher end of the scale, as many movies on offer can be purchased outright for a similar price tag.
Along with Google's e-book store, launched in the summer, Movies for Android has led many analysts to believe that the search engine giant is looking to take a bite out of Apple and Amazon's hare of the online retail market.
