iPhone 4 catches fire aboard Australian plane flight

New battery recall could be on horizon

iPhone 4 fire

Passengers on an Australian Regional Express airline flight were panicked after one traveller's iPhone 4 began to glow red, filling the cabin with thick smoke.

The incident, which took place just after flight ZL319 from Lismore landed in Sydney, could be the first indication that Apple may once again be lumbered with a batch of bad batteries, reports IT news site thinq_.

Attendants on the flight acted quickly to get everything under control by extinguishing the tell-tale red glow coming from the handet, suggesting the phone's lithium ion battery was the cause of the blaze.

"All passengers and crew on board were unharmed", read a statement released by the airline.

The device has been handed over to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau for further analysis, and it wouldn’t be a long shot to assume that Apple executives and techies might be called on to explain its bizarre behaviour.

Apple has released no official statement concerning the fire - but it wouldn't be the first time Apple devices have suffered from dodgy batteries. Only a few weeks ago, the iPad 2 maker had to recall first-generation iPod Nanos after reports of some devices overheating.
