Epson’s new Stylus SX445W multifunction inkjet is part of the company’s new ‘Small-in-One’ range, offering printing, scanning and copying facilities for less than £60 at current online prices. Even in its boxed state, the device feels remarkably light. That’s because it weighs in at just 4.2kg without the ink cartridges, and measures a tidy 390x300x145mm.

Wi-Fi connection
Styled in Epson’s usual mix of matt and gloss black, the Stylus SX445W even has a subtle textured pattern on the scanner cover. A simple sheet feeder at the back holds 100 pages of A4, and the expected extenders at the front catch the printed results. Just below the scanner cover is a large tilting control area that boasts a 6.3cm colour LCD screen with smart-navigation touch controls which are a dream to operate.

Beside the control panel is a memory card reader for most varieties of SD and Memory Stick, but alas no sign of a USB port for PictBridge-enabled cameras. However, you do have Wi-Fi connection – and the Wi-Fi setup process on the SX445W is one of the easiest we’ve come across, making use of the on-board menu. On the down side, there’s no wired Ethernet networking option, but you can connect physically to your PC using the supplied USB lead.

Performance
This MFP is obviously targeted at the small business/home office crowd who don’t need to print vast volumes, and who would like the option to be able to produce good-quality photos. What you’ll need for the latter is plenty of patience, as print speeds are painfully slow.

Draft black text documents we succeeded in squeezing out at a rate of 18 pages per minute (ppm), but text pages at standard quality dropped to a woeful 7ppm. A standard 10x15cm colour photo took just over two minutes and an A4-sized image was closer to five minutes, with copies of A4 photos extending to a bottom-numbing 9 minutes 15 seconds.

The good news, on the other hand, is that the quality of both photos and text documents is universally high, with bright vibrant colours, impressive detail and authentic tones. The same is true whether you use memory cards or scan from originals – if you’re prepared to wait then the results are worth it.

Negative
  • Slow print speeds.

Verdict

The Epson Stylus SX445W certainly lives up to its 'Small-in-One' tag with its tiny footprint, but even the excellent Wi-Fi connectivity and high image quality don't quite make up for the lamentably slow printing times.
