Okay, serious buyers only need apply here. If you’re the sort of person who drives a Fiesta but likes to take a Ferrari or some other monster manhood extension for a test drive at the weekend with no intention, or indeed means of buying it… then move on by. There’s nothing to see here!
If, however, you are in the market for a PC with some serious kick under its bonnet, and don’t blanche at the thought of outlaying nearly two grand (inc. VAT) for the privilege of owning said beast… meet the Evesham Axis 1200 DDR.
The specification is truly impressive. At its core is the new Asus A7M266 motherboard, which supports the new Double Data Rate RAM, hence the DDR in the moniker. And it has 256MB of this DDR RAM onboard, matched with a 1.2GHz Athlon processor. The processor is the new C-Type Athlon, which means that it is fully compatible with the 266MHz bus, along with the memory.
So this is a true 266MHz system, and the core components are not lacking either. A Leadtek Geforce 2 Ultra with 64MB of onboard DDR memory provides the graphics, and the hard drive is a very fast, 60GB affair, so there’s plenty of storage space here.
This combination is quite simply jaw-droppingly, nay dislocatingly fast, particularly when it comes to 3D-intensive applications where the DDR system memory really shows its power. This is the fastest PC this reviewer has ever played with, that’s for sure.
Backing up the power is a solid CD Re-Writer and DVD drive, along with a bog standard modem, and the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 sound card driving Creative Desktop Theatre 5.1 speakers. No corner has been cut here.
As for the display, this rig is hooked up to the Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 92 19-inch monitor, which provides an excellent degree of clarity. The Axis is quality through and through – the only minor fault we could find with it was the mouse, which is a rather plasticky, basic, Logitech wheelmouse. But that’s really nit-picking…
