frantic and fun Wii game (17/07/2007)
It's strange that one of the more innovative uses of the Wii's infamous controller has slipped without much notice onto the market. But in the case of Eledees, that's what's happened. While the fun-but-limited Cooking Mama racks up the sales, for instance, Eledees is seemingly already heading to the racks of obscurity, and that's a real pity.
Originally published in the States as Elebits, it's a game that simply couldn't work effectively on any other format. And the idea behind it is really very simple. There are little creatures, called Eledees, that you need to hunt down and catch in each level. You do this, through the use of the Wiimote and the Nunchuk controller, by picking up items in a room and throwing them out of the way.
So, for example, in a standard room you may need to throw boxes, furniture and objects all about the place to try to track down the little critters who are trying to avoid being caught. Bluntly, if a level doesn't end with the screen resembling a teenager's bedroom, something's not gone right.
As the game progresses your strength increases, and the objects you can fling around the place can be heavier. There's also an unwise experiment with limiting gravity, but we'll let that pass. Because the fun factor at times feels like it's going off the scale. Pure gaming bliss is the best way to describe Eledees at its best, as you wave the Wiimote around, desperately hunting down the required creatures to progress. In multi-player mode it's even more frenetic and bountiful fun.
It's not all perfect, of course. The game engine can't always keep up with the action on-screen, and there are moments that are horribly fiddly, but you'll forgive them easily enough. Some of the development choices don't work as well as others. You could also argue that the amount of content to work through isn't enough, although the inclusion of a terrific construction kit easily compensates for that.
Eledees is certainly a title with a couple of problems, but it's still a smashing idea for a game, executed with skill and commitment. It's also a little bit different, very easy to pick up and a delight to play when it hits top form. So while it's not a spot-on dish, there are more ideas and there's more fun in Eledees than games that are currently outselling it. That can't be right, and should you choose to do something about it, you're likely to get quite a lot out of the gesture yourself.
A fascinating, hugely entertaining, occasionally frustrating but ultimately delightful little game, and one that deserves your support. And cash.
