Not a bad way to spend a fiver (19/06/2008)
£4.99 is about the right price point for Postman Pat: Greendale Fun. For the package is a slight yet terrifically presented collection of activities, with the bonus of a full Postman Pat episode thrown into the mix.
It should be said that from top to bottom the package looks sparkling, with bright Postman Pat visuals and authentic voice work for full continuity with the television programme. This all ultimately leads you to a menu where you can choose what to do. The activities are aimed at those from two-and-a-half upwards, and we roped in a four-year-old test subject to help take Pat on his rounds.
The most successful activities were the game of snap (which proved as simple yet engaging as you'd hope it to be), and the tile slider, where a jumbled picture needed to be rearranged into place. The latter activity in particular proved the need for the game's difficulty levels (and each of the activities in Greendale Fun can be played at varying levels, making it appropriate for most younger players), as the simple pictures were perhaps too easy to complete, while the trickier ones kept our test subject foxed for some time.
The word search, too, was simple and good fun, although the introduction of kiddie-friendly Sudoku seemed to be a bit of a misstep. Trying to explain the fineries of the puzzle to a four-year-old was a task beyond this reviewer, sadly. The four-year-old in question was far happier with the spot the difference game, which he suitably enjoyed.
The disc is then bolstered with a few extra bits and bobs. The Meet The Cast piece is a bit shallow, as it's just a well-drawn image map of all the characters, and if you roll the mouse over any of them you get a bit of textual information.
Better instead to opt for the print and colour segment, which provides a series of images you can send to your printer for your own pint-sized Postman Pat fan to colour in. Finally, there's the episode itself, clumsily presented in an ill-shaped window that doesn't come close to filling half of the screen.
Postman Pat: Greendale Fun didn't keep the youngster we had at hand occupied for a huge length of time, but he did enjoy it while it lasted, and still occasionally asks for another go. As we said at the start, a fiver is a fair asking price. Any more and you may question the amount of content you get, but there's easily a few hours of fun tucked away here.
It won't last long, but this is a good, appropriately-priced blast of Postman Pat fun. Definitely worth the asking price.
