phone with 5-megapixel camera (21/12/2006)
It was only ever going to be a matter of time before a camera-phone boasting 5-megapixels made its way into the UK, and LG is first past the post with its KG920.
The lens sits on the back of the handset. And also on the front. There is only one lens, but it and the number pad are back to back and you can swivel them through 180 degrees. This means you can use the handset's screen as a viewfinder to frame photos of what the lens can see when pointed away from you, or point the lens at you and use the screen to frame self-portraits.
With its Xenon flash the camera is reasonably competent indoors and the auto-focus worked well during testing, as did the macro mode. Test prints at A4 were certainly good enough to share with friends and family or hang on the wall. So far, then, so good.
But if you are half-way serious about your photography, a separate camera is going to be better. There's no optical zoom on the KG920, just 4x digital, and digital zoom is always to be avoided at all costs. A burst mode offers up to 6 shots but only at the lowest resolution, and although the range of filters and settings available is reasonable compared to what you'd find on other phones, it's not up to what you'd expect from a good quality digital camera.
In other respects the KG920 is only a fair mobile phone. It has a music player but neither this nor the camera will work without a miniSD memory card in the slot on the right hand edge. Fortunately you get a 256MB card with the phone.
The button arrangement on the front of the KG920 is idiosyncratic, with the number pad squeezed to the left and the navigation button sitting to its right. It takes a little getting used to, as do the four buttons to the left side of the screen which provide quick access to some of the camera functions and also take you to the handset's diary and music player when the camera is not being used.
The other on-board software includes a calendar, Web browser, e-mail and messaging tools, alarms and unit converters. You can use the handset as a USB mass storage device, but you can't synchronise it with a PC, and overall we'd say the phone side of things is average.
What is remarkable, though, is that LG has managed to cram its components into hardware that weighs just 130g and measures a not-too-large 108 x 50 x 18mm.
The KG920 produces reasonable quality photos and is good enough for getting prints from holiday snaps. Its range of features is OK, but it doesn't compare to what you get with a good digital camera, and there are plenty of 5-megapixel - and higher - cameras out there to choose from. Combine this with average phone features and you have a device which does neither job superbly well. We'll be sticking with a separate phone and digital camera for now.
