feature packed handheld with one fatal flaw (04/04/2008)
E-TEN is a prolific producer of Windows Mobile handhelds, and more often than not extra features like GPS and FM radio receivers are included as standard.
That is the case with the M800, the company's current flagship model, which seems to cram in just about every feature any PDA has ever had.
As well as the GPS antenna, there is an application for making use of it which can send your current location identified in latitude and longitude as part of an SMS message.
3G with HSDPA support is included, and there is a front-facing camera for video calling as well as a back-mounted camera for shooting stills at resolutions up to 2 megapxiels.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in too, and if you are thinking of using the Wi-Fi or 3G for Web browsing, then the fact that the 2.8-inch screen displays 640 x 480 pixels might be worth knowing. Most Windows Mobile devices stick resolutely with 320 x 240, and the extra pixels here help make the screen clear and sharp.
A rarity in PDAs of any kind, the Glofiish M800 inlcudes a business card scanner. This is a combination of the built-in camera for photographing business cards and software for turning the captured card into an entry in the device contact database.
But even that is not the highlight. That has to be the sliding keyboard. These are becoming more common in PDAs, and E-TEN is no stranger to the idea. But to see one in such an otherwise well-featured device is still quite a big deal. We can't help thinking that the user who needs to pen e-mails and edit documents on the go could be easily drawn.
E-TEN is generous with the freebie software too, which ranges from a redesigned Today screen that offers things like the current weather at the tap of a touch-icon, to a quick-launch tool for common applications and features, call barring and allow lists, backup utility and plenty more.
All of which makes the one serious and significant design flaw of this device very, very irritating indeed.
For reasons we really can't begin to fathom, E-TEN has opted for touch-sensitive buttons on the front fascia of the device. This means that the Call and End buttons, softmenu buttons and the others that sit on the front fascia are all responsive to touch rather than being physical buttons.
Using them proved irritating as you can't always be sure you have selected what you want, and it is easy to tap a button by accident. Coupled with the fiddly mini joystick that sits between them where we'd prefer a navigation pad, these buttons make for a very irritating time indeed.
If it weren't for the touch buttons and miniature joystick E-TEN would have a feature-packed winner here. It is such a shame, but we can't really recommend the M800.
