satellite navigation for drivers and pedestrians (04/05/2005)
"Sat Nav" is one of those trendy technological phrases that just makes us cringe. It somehow conjures up long forgotten images of yuppies, filofaxes and wine bars. Yet there's no denying that a GPS satellite navigation system is extremely handy if you do a lot of travelling.
And the PNA 150 - the acronym stands for Personal Navigation Assistant - is essentially a Pocket PC built to be a dedicated satellite navigation device. It comes with the Navigon MobileNavigator software version 4.2 installed and that's all. Well, apart from the 256MB memory card which is pre-loaded with the UK and Ireland maps.
It's clear that the manufacturer is gunning for flexibility with this package. Not only do you get a car mounting kit with the unit, as well as a cigarette lighter charging lead, you also get a bike mounting kit. And as it's only approximately 13cm by 8cm in size (and 2cm thick) it's portable enough to use on foot, so when you're trying to find a shop in an unfamiliar big city, for example, the BlueMedia PNA 150 can come to the rescue.
The build quality is excellent all round. The BlueMedia PNA 150 is very sturdy and comes with a smart little pen (complete with holder built into the back of the unit) for use with the touch screen. There's a small directional pad for scrolling around the maps, and this too is solidly built without being clunky.
Full marks for the car mounting kit too, as this boasts a powerful sucker mechanism which locks the BlueMedia PNA 150 solidly into position on the inside of the windscreen. There's also a flexible holding arm which can be manipulated for the best possible viewing position.
Setting the device up is a doddle, with the only hold up being the necessity to go online to obtain an activation code. Before you know it, the unit will be telling you to "Turn left in 200 metres" from its small but effective little speaker (there are no problems with the volume of the speech, which is obviously crucial).
In terms of overall effectiveness, the navigation instructions are very good. They're based on pretty recent maps (dated back to the second quarter of last year) and on several road trips we found the BlueMedia PNA 150 to be generally spot on.
Very occasionally it delivers a turning instruction a whisker too early, so you actually end up taking the preceding left or right turn. This only happened to us twice in a number of test drives, and it's about the only minor flaw we can pick with the navigation quality.
The PNA's menu system is user friendly, although entering a long destination address can be a touch fiddly as it requires a lot of touch screen pressing (each on-screen key covers several letters, so to select C you have to hit the ABC button three times, as when sending text messages on a mobile phone).
If you're planning a driving trip out to Europe, the bundled CDs also contain maps of the continent which can be loaded onto the memory card. Now that's a real boon as, let's face it, driving on the wrong side of the road is off-putting enough without worrying about getting lost too.
Getting lost is a thing of the past with the PNA, whether you travel by car or bike, or you're on foot in town. The unit is highly portable, well built and up to date on the maps front, delivering spot-on navigation instructions. If you do a lot of travelling then it's certainly worth the asking price.
