HP’s DeskJet 995c is a high-end inkjet printer with a difference. As well as its USB connection, it can receive data through the ether, via a built-in Bluetooth link. This local area wireless technology will work with Bluetooth-equipped PCs, notebooks and PDAs. Simply moving within range of the printer couples the two together.
The sleek, silver and black printer takes paper up to A4 size, from a 150-sheet feed tray which includes a separate slot for envelopes. All media feeds from the front, is turned through 180 degrees and feeds out again to a tray directly above the input tray. An optional duplex unit enables printing on both sides of the paper in a single operation.
The DeskJet 995c prints at 600dpi on normal paper and at up to 2400dpi by 1200dpi on photographic paper. Photo output is extremely good, close to silver halide quality and, as HP maintains, the 600dpi option with PhotoRET III enhancement technology is virtually indistinguishable and considerably quicker than high-resolution print. Standard black text and colour graphics are crisp and clear, even on general-purpose, photocopier paper.
HP claims print speeds of up to 6.5ppm in black and 5ppm in colour. Under test, both of these claims proved a little optimistic, but depending on the complexity of the document you’re printing, you can get somewhere near them. HP’s control software is well-designed and makes the printer easy to service as well as to control. Drivers are provided for both Windows PCs and Macintosh.
The supplied Bluetooth manager software runs on your PC and shows the DeskJet 995c as an available Bluetooth resource. Printing proceeds in exactly the same way as through a wired USB link, it’s just that you don’t need a cable. There’s no noticeable print speed reduction using the wireless connection and the Bluetooth capability means you can position the printer more remotely than when linked by a cable.
If you dislike cables or want to work the same printer from more than one PC or handheld, the DeskJet 995c is a good option and is, so far, one of few Bluetooth-equipped printers on the market.
