Kyocera Mita’s popular Ecosys FS1xxx series of compact mono laser printers has stood the test of time: easy to set up, robust and usually trouble-free, they are ideal for a small office or if you want a mono laser at home.

A new addition to the family line-up is the FS-1300D, the ‘D’ signifying an integrated duplexer for double-sided printing. It’s fast too: Kyocera quotes a 28ppm print speed, something that our speed tests bore out, although this comes as no great surprise since manufacturers’ quoted print speeds for laser printers are more accurate than the often wildly exaggerated speeds quoted for inkjets.

The fast speed is thanks in part to the 360MHz processor and the 32MB of RAM, which can be increased to a maximum of 544MB if you start running out of memory on larger jobs. The duty cycle is a quoted 20,000 pages per month, while the photo drum is guaranteed for 100,000 pages or three years. The Ecosys FS-1300D comes as standard with a USB 2.0 interface, although a 100BaseT Network card is available for an additional £200.

In an office environment the FS-1300D’s paper handling capabilities can be added to, so that the printer grows as your company does. As standard the printer holds 250 sheets of A4 in the input tray in the bottom of the printer, while the maximum output capacity is also 250 sheets. You can add further trays (two maximum, £99 each) to the base of the unit until the maximum paper handling capacity of 800 sheets is reached.

As with all the family, the basic FS-1300D is a compact unit measuring just 375 x 393 x 250mm and weighing in at 10kg including toner cartridge. A replacement toner cartridge costs around £53 and should be good for about 7,200 pages.

Talking of toner, the FS-1300D is simplicity to set up: just lift the lid and push the toner cartridge into place. When it’s run for the first time the printer takes some 15 minutes to charge the imaging drum, and you can amuse yourself (as we did) by watching the multi-coloured LED ring do its stuff. The ring indicates things such as paper jams and low toner, and life is made easier by just having two control buttons; Start and Cancel.

Print quality for text and business graphics is very good but, as with the vast majority of laser mono printers, photo image quality is best not worried about. Kyocera Mita backs the FS-1300D with a two-year return-to-base warranty.

Verdict
Another valued addition to Kyocera Mita's compact mono laser range, the Ecosys FS-1300D is ideal for a small company where it can grow with the business, with the added advantage of being a duplex printer. Alternatively it could be used as a home printer if you do a lot of mono, non-image printing.
