In a survey that rather conflicts with recent talk of mobile phones outselling MP3 players as the audio solution of choice, it turns out that 66 percent of mobile phone users have no interest in mobile music downloads.

Citing price as the main problem, it looks as though providers will have to rethink the often excessive premiums placed on direct-to-mobile music, reportedly in place to offset network bandwidth costs.

Most participants are making the reasonable point that songs should be available for the same or similar amount of money you’d pay with traditional online services such as iTunes, though copyright restrictions of downloaded tracks which prevent them from being copied off the phone or to a restricted number of PCs throws a further fly into the ointment.

We can’t say we’re surprised by the news, though the slow adoption of these sorts of services is synonymous with an industry that seems to insist on placing an (often unreasonable) premium on anything new or innovative until enough customers vote with their feet (or fingers) to force a more reasonable business model into place.
