The Razer Goliathus League of Legends Collector’s Edition joins the newly released Razer Naga Hex in Razer’s selection of licensed gaming gear. If you’re a diehard League of Legends fan, you’ll be sorely tempted to spring for Razer’s new licensed League of Legends versions of its Goliathus mousepad and Naga Hex gaming mouse. As mouse pads go, it’s pretty good, letting you play for hours on end while letting everyone around you know just what game keeps you up all night.
Design and Features
The graphic on the Goliathus is more than you’ll normally see on the usual dull grey faces of precision gaming surfaces. The graphic includes several recognizable League of Legends characters pitched in mid-battle. In fact, with the 10 by 14-inch dimensions of the surface, it’s more like a poster than a mousepad. If you wanted the perfect piece of swag to show off your League of Legends obsession, this is it.
The thin mouse pad—0.12 inch thick—is flexible, so there shouldn’t be any problem rolling it up and tucking it into a bag to take to your next LAN party or tournament. It’s also lightweight, weighing a mere 6.6 ounces. By comparison, the thick rubber Roccat Hiro 3D Supremacy Surface weighs 10.2 ounces, while the all-metal Razer Ironclad weighs over a pound.
Like most gaming accessories, Razer touts that the cloth is optimized for gaming, featuring a tight weave that reduces friction and offers consistent response with the numerous optical and laser sensors used in gaming mice today. Claims aside, the satiny texture of the surface will keep your mouse gliding with excellent control, while a grippy foam-rubber underside keeps it relatively secure on your desk or table. This non-skid surface does the trick, even on slick surfaces like glass, polished wood, or formica.
The edges of the Goliathus feature a heavy duty stitched frame to eliminate the fraying around the edges that plagues these sorts of layered cloth-on-foam-rubber designs. Despite this added durability, Razer only covers the Goliathus with a 180-day warranty. However, as an added bonus for League of Legends fans, the Goliathus comes bundled with codes redeemable for the King Tryndamere skin.
Once we had the new Goliathus mat and Naga Hex mouse in the labs, there was no question that we’d be testing it in League of Legends. As I took my Jungler through the Fields of Justice, the mouse pad did everything I expected it to. It stayed put, whether I was making small precise movements of broad sweeping actions. The surface never caused any perceptible tracking issues, and felt comfortable under my wrist and arm the entire time. One feature that was missed, however, is the wrist rest that came bundled with the Razer Vespula.
The Razer Goliathus League of Legends Collector’s Edition proved itself to be a quality mousepad, letting me play at a high-level without ever getting in the way. Naturally, any licensed product with a big graphic on it will have limited appeal beyond its intended market, but for League of Legends fans with a penchant for flashy gear, this is the gaming mousepad for you.
