Not all scanners are big flatbed machines. Office scanners, designed primarily for archiving and turning paper documents into editable text files using optical character recognition (OCR), are usually sheet-feed devices, which scan more quickly and are easier to load and use. Xerox’s DocuMate 4440 is of this second type and offers fully duplex scanning, in which both sides of each page are scanned in a single pass.
The scanner, with a pewter-coloured front and dark grey base, takes up very little room on a desk when not in use, though unfolding the feed and output trays into their working positions increases its size considerably.
Up to 50 pages can be loaded at a time and scans can be started from the simple control panel on the scanner’s front or from the Windows desktop, via the OneTouch panel. This software offers a variety of different scan functions, such as scanning to email, and directly to a Word document or a PDF file. Each function is given a number and the numbers are repeated in a seven-segment LED display on the scanner’s front.
Xerox provides a wealth of software with the scanner, including OmniPage 15, PaperPort 11 and Presto! BizCard 5, and Kofax VRS works transparently to improve the quality of page images by deskewing them and adjusting things like image contrast.
In our tests, a 10-page, double-sided document scanned in 21s, equivalent to 57ppm, which is an excellent turn of speed. Image quality, both as low-resolution 200dpi archival images and as 300dpi OCR documents, is good, with few recognition errors. The maximum resolution of 600dpi is even good enough to produce above-average colour scans of photo prints, too.
